Allowing the Process to Unfold

Leana Savoie is our fantastic writer for July, giving us her perspective on the concept of flow, all through the lens of theatre and hypnosis. Enjoy this compelling discussion with Leana, and be sure to check out her feature in this month's issue of En Root!

This month's theme is all about flow. Tell us how this theme has played a role in your personal or professional life. Understanding and appreciating flow has been pivotal in my work, both as a hypnosis practitioner, and as a theatre artist. It has taught me to stay present with myself and trust the creative process. In my hypnosis work, flow has allowed my clients to access deep wellsprings of wisdom and intuition. In my work on the stage, flow is always where I find the most interesting and innovative artistic choices. Flow is where surprising and out-of-the-box solutions make themselves known. Whenever I am in resistance or anxiety about a project, the key is always to get out of my head and start playing! There is so much magic that occurs when we aren't afraid of making a mistake. A teacher once taught me that in order to be great, you must be willing to risk failure. Flow helps us to embrace this tenet by getting us out of the ego-mind state that wants to control the outcome. The most extraordinary ideas and possibilities always lay on the other side of our fear.

At OutGrowth, we believe in designing the space and time to reimagine the path forward. How do you believe understanding and/or experiencing flow can impact our perspective and influence our future decisions?

Experiencing flow fosters a perspective that is based in trust and allowing. When we allow a process to unfold, instead of forcing or pushing, it becomes easier to make decisions that are right for us. We can trust our intuition, because we are situated in the present moment and not projecting our worries into the future. Flow creates a perspective of wonder and fun, even when we are working hard. Or maybe I should say playing hard. ;-)

What is one hard lesson you learned in this past year that contributed to your growth?

Life is a continually unfolding process. There is no destination or finish line. We are never done learning, growing, and exploring.

What is one competency or skill you hope to develop in 2023/2024?

In the coming year, I want to continue to cultivate a learning orientation toward life. This means looking at life, not through a lens of right/wrong or success/failure, but from an understanding that there is always a gift in every situation. We only have to train our eyes to be able to see it. When a situation feels challenging or less than ideal, it is about asking, "How is this for me? How can I learn or grow from what is happening right now?"

What inspires you?

Authenticity, Courage, and Playfulness.

At OutGrowth, we believe in preparing the next generation of leaders. What is one resource you'd recommend to those looking to carve out the time for growth in the next year?

Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke

What's next? What are you excited about in the coming year?

I am excited to be living in a new part of the country and exploring the stunning nature here. I am excited to explore the places where hypnosis and trance work converge with the creative and artistic realms. It feels good to be in flow!
